hello all,

Recently a friend claimed that "all" of the Grateful Dead's songs were written by someone other than the people in the band. I said I didn't believe him. He got me thinking and now I want to know. Is there somewhere on this site or somewhere on the www that someone could refer me to?

Thanks in Advance....

way i understand it... Many songs were covers. Dead originals were usually made by the members, the music that is, and then given to the lyricists to add on words (or vice versa sometimes, not sure). the earlier songs had more lyrics from the actual members like some of the mentioned above.

Not to give anyone short shrift - Donna wrote a few songs herself, Brent wrote several, even Mickey and Phil contributed material.

Also - I consider Robert Hunter to be an integral part of the band - the whole trip would have been altogether different without him. By that logic, the majority of their originals were written by band members.

According to dead.net there were 12 "official" members of the band...
Jerry Garcia
Bob Weir
Billy Kreutzmann
Phil Lesh
Mickey Hart
Robert Hunter
Ron McKernan
Tom Constanten
Keith Godchaux
Donna Godchaux
Brent Mydland
Vince Welnick
John Perry Barlow

click on the individual picture, and on the personal bio page you will find links to "Songs with lyrics by..." and "Songs with music by..."
*but JPB isn't given any writing credits on "his" page???

somebody at dead.net needs to tighten up

the "Songs" section... http://www.dead.net/songs/ ... list all songs performed by the band and gives music and lyric credits for each one of them

If you do a google search, I am sure you can find a listing of each song the Dead played and who wrote it. You also may want to try to find a copy of Deadbase IX, X, or XI (i'm actually not sure if there is an XI). Either way, these books have all the info you could ever ask for regarding the GD and also JGB

The lyrics, in most cases, were written by Hunter or Barlow (excluding covers), but some were written by band members.

Weir wrote the words to The Other One, Born Cross Eyed, and One More Saturday Night, among others. Jerry wrote Cryptical Envelopment and Cream Puff War, but that might be it, actually. I think Phil wrote New Potato Caboose and Childhood's End. The words to Unbroken Chain were written by someone else.

So in short, your friend is mostly right, when it comes to lyrics. Music is another story though.
